Cancers in the rectum - Can we preserve your sphincter? Photo essay

This is the basic anatomy of the anal region. Notice the three read beads, which represent the sphincters. If the rectal cancer lies along a line that touches or cuts through the red beads, the patient will need removal of the anus and a permanent stoma. If there is a margin of 1 cm, sphincter preservation canc be attempted. 


This is the baby bottom appearance of the rectum during the Total mesorectal Excison. This is the gold standard treatment in rectal cancer. This ensures that you are able to provide the best curative solution to the cancer.
